Convent - Sisters of St Joseph - O’Connor, ACT (Josephites - RSJ)

The Sisters of St. Joseph came to O’Connor on the 21st January, 1956 at the request of Archbishop Eris O’Brien who wanted Sisters to staff a Primary School.

They purchased a small cottage at 61 Boronia Drive. O’Connor was an ideal place for the Sisters, since the people living there were mostly young married couples with small children. Because the school Church was not completed classes did not begin until the 12th February. A variety of nationalities was represented but the unity of purpose soon over came this problem.

In 1958 the foundation stone for the present Convent was laid and on the 10th May, 1959 the official opening took place.

Six Sisters are living in semi-retirement and engaged in various ministries e.g.

  • Prayer, Presence, Hospitality
  • Ecumenical involvement
  • Visitation of elderly and sick
  • Cenacle of the Marian Movement of Priests
  • St Joseph information (the Catholic Encyclopedia)
